City Hall work behind schedule

Tuesday, July 23, 2002 | 10:41 a.m.

The Las Vegas City Hall building addition is running five months behind schedule because of a sloping floor that needs to be repaired, a city spokesman said.

However, officials still hope to bring the $20.2 million expansion, which includes a cantilever and adjacent parking garage in under budget, despite $800,000 in additional costs, including repairs to a seven-inch slope over a 50-yard width of floor.

The projected costs included a $1 million contingency, which means that while the cost of the 40,000-square-foot structure has gone over original projections, the project technically is $200,000 under budget.

The building addition originally was scheduled to open in April, but now is projected to open in September, city officials said.

It is customary for such projects to be completed before the city and contractors sit down to haggle over who is responsible for costs of repairs.
