Company expected to file for bankruptcy

Friday, July 19, 2002 | 9:50 a.m.

WorldCom Inc. is planning to file for bankruptcy protection from its creditors by early next week, people briefed on the matter said Thursday night.

The bankruptcy filing would be yet another stage in the disintegration of WorldCom, the nation's second-largest long-distance carrier and operator of the largest Internet data network. WorldCom disclosed last month it had improperly accounted for $3.8 billion in expenses.

The filing, which would surpass Enron's as the largest in the United States, could come as early as Sunday.
