Berkley’s father has surgery

Friday, July 19, 2002 | 10:44 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- George Levine, the 77-year-old father of Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., is in good condition today after he underwent surgery Thursday, Berkley spokesman Michael O'Donovan said. Doctors unclogged the carotid artery in his neck.

Levine called 911 after he had what doctors believe was a mild stroke. They performed tests and recommended immediate surgery at Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center.

Berkley on Thursday left Washington to be with her father and is back in Las Vegas this weekend.

Berkley said it was "a blessing" that the blockage was caught early before he had a more serious stroke, O'Donovan said. Levine will need follow-up surgery in about two weeks, O'Donovan said.
