Survey reveals gambling habits

Thursday, July 18, 2002 | 11:09 a.m.

More than 50 million people visited casinos last year -- people who tend to have higher incomes, more hobbies and who are more civic-minded than non-gamblers, according to a survey by one of the world's largest casino companies aimed at showing a strong appetite for gambling.

Harrah's Entertainment Inc. of Las Vegas today said its survey shows that the typical casino gambler defies stereotyping.

"The results of this survey disprove a number of long-standing myths about casino players," said Gary Loveman, Harrah's president and chief operating officer. "The findings demonstrate that casino players have broad appetites for live-enriching experiences, are financially stable and responsible and are active in political and community life."

The median household income of gamblers is $49,753, compared to $41,343 for the overall U.S. population, the survey said. The typical gambler is middle-aged and more likely to be female, it said.
