Savvy wine buys: ‘99 Luna Sangiovese
Wednesday, July 17, 2002 | 8:23 a.m.
Sangiovese is well known as the principal varietal in Chianti, but during the last decade California winemakers began to have considerable success with it in the United States. Luna produces a nice white, but they really score points with this effort. The wine is redolent of dark fruit such as cherry and blackberry, and though still a bit on the tannic side, softer than many of the Italian wines produced during the same year. It might be a good idea to lay it down for a year or two, but it will hold up nicely to that robust marinara sauce drizzled over a homemade pasta.
