Applications for fed airport screeners are being accepted

Wednesday, July 17, 2002 | 9:49 a.m.

The Transportation Security Administration is now accepting job applications for federal security screeners at 300 airports including McCarran International Airport.

Nov. 1 is the deadline set for all airports to employ federal screeners. Currently three airports have federalized security checkpoints.

On Tuesday the TSA announced that 49 additional airports will be accepting screener applications, pushing the number of airports looking for security to more than 300.

Candidates can apply online at www.tsa.dot.gov or call 1-877-631-5627. Salaries will range from $23,600 to $35,400, and employees receive federal benefits, including health and life insurance.

Currently, screening at McCarran is done by Wackenhut Security. Once federal screeners are in place at McCarran they will be supervised by former Nellis Air Force Base commander James Blair, who will serve as federal security director at the airport.
