LVCVA lands major Hispanic travel show

Tuesday, July 16, 2002 | 11:07 a.m.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has attracted the nation's largest Hispanic travel show, giving the city the opportunity to play host to hundreds of travel buyers from Latin America.

La Cumbre -- Spanish for "the top" or "the summit" -- is scheduled Sept. 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Las Vegas Hilton.

"This is a real coup that we got it," said LVCVA spokeswoman Erika Brandvik.

La Cumbre, now in its 13th year, is meeting in Las Vegas for the first time after alternating between Florida, Houston, New Orleans and Anaheim, Calif. About 700 suppliers from throughout North America and about 700 buyers from Central and South America and Spain will attend the event. The largest delegations traditionally come from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

The LVCVA board of directors approved spending $231,000 to host the event. Officials say delegates at the show conduct about $1.7 billion in business, 10 percent of which is spent in the host city.
