Letter: Good riddance to pledge phrase

Tuesday, July 16, 2002 | 8:56 a.m.

It is about time!

The phrase "under God" should never have been put in the Pledge of Allegiance in the first place.

America is great through the dedication and contributions of people of diverse beliefs from all around the world who came here to be free from persecution, including the religious.

But I have never said "under God" when I pledged my allegiance to the country I love because I thought it unfair and not what our forefathers declared.

I have long wondered just when reason and fairness, not religious hysteria, would prevail.

Religion is too personal a matter to flaunt in public, and proselytizing is abhorrent to me and others.

Just walking through the doors of any religious house of worship does not make you a decent human being. It is how you treat all others. That is the benchmark of a person of quality.
