U.K.’s largest casino planned; will open in summer 2003

LONDON -- Britain's biggest casino is to be built in England's second city, Birmingham, betting and casino group Stanley Leisure said today.

The group said it had been granted permission to establish the casino, which will have 40 gaming tables, at Birmingham's Star City leisure complex.

The new Stanley Star City Casino will open in summer 2003, and employ more than 200 staff members, the company said.

"The Stanley Star City will be the U.K.'s largest casino and, along with its sister sites, the China Palace and the Midland Wheel, will put Birmingham firmly on the map as a destination gaming city," Chief Executive Bob Wiper said.

Birmingham is 110 miles north of London.
