Youth World Series set for Henderson
More than 600 of baseball's best 8-to-10-year-olds will compete this week in the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Major Division World Series at Henderson's Arroyo Grande Sports Complex.
Games involving the 50 teams from 20 states will be played daily at the lighted, eight-field complex, with the championship game slated for 2 p.m. Sunday.
This is the second straight year the World Series is being played in Henderson.
Relatives said Barrera was electrocuted when he tried to free some metal roofing that had blown into high-tension wires.
Barrera hit 455 home runs during a 26-year career in the Mexican Baseball League. He was a player-manager for Campeche before leaving that post two months ago without formally retiring. He also holds the RBI record with 1,944.
Ex-Seahawk Blades arrested in Miami
Ex-Seattle Seahawks receiver Brian Blades was arrested today and charged with battery on a police officer, officials said.
Blades was also charged with resisting arrest with violence and disorderly intoxication.
He was released from the Miami-Dade County Jail on $10,500 bond, with an arraignment set for Aug. 5 before Circuit Judge Cecilia Altonaga. Neither jail nor court records listed an attorney for Blades.
Police said Blades was at Fat Tuesdays on South Beach's Ocean Drive when a fight broke out. Several police officers who work off duty there tried to break up the fight and Blades attacked one of them, said Miami Beach Lt. Eduardo Yero.
Senators sign Alfredsson to deal
The Ottawa Senators signed captain Daniel Alfredsson to a two-year contract today.
The 29-year-old right wing led the Senators with a career-high 37 goals and 34 assists last season. He made $3 million after missing all of training camp last September in a contract dispute.
It was the second time in his career that he had missed training camp.
Reports circulated since Friday that the Sens and Alfredsson, a restricted free agent, had agreed to a deal worth $9.5 million.
