Two teens charged in NLV shooting
Two teenagers were charged last week with murder in the April slaying of a man in North Las Vegas.
Milton L. Ennis, 16, and Marvin A. Robinson, 17, were in the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center on unrelated charges when they were arrested Thursday on murder charges, North Las Vegas Police said.
The pair is accused in the shooting death of Tyrone Hammond in the 3300 block of Civic Center Drive on April 28.
Power usage still setting records
The heat is also taking a toll on Las Vegas utilities. Officials from Nevada Power Co. report record usage during the past week, with 4,617 megawatts on Friday.
One megawatt is considered enough to power 1,000 homes.
The records come as record heat scorches the Las Vegas Valley, causing residents and businesses alike to keep air conditioners running. Growth has also accounted for the rise in usage, Nevada Power spokeswoman Sonya Headen said.
Friday's usage was the third record set last week, which began with a record 4,405 megawatts Monday. The other record was set Wednesday.
Demand for power has risen sharply in the years since 1994, when 2,851 megawatts set a record for peak power. Despite the increase, Nevada Power has enough supply to keep fans and air conditioners running, Headen said.
High court will hear ballot battle
The Nevada Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments Thursday on the petition by Kevin M. Williams to be put back on the election ballot as a candidate for Clark County Commission District E.
District Judge Michael Douglas ordered his name be stricken from the ballot on grounds he did not live at the address given on his declaration of candidacy.
Williams listed his address as 3950 Koval Lane, Apt. 3018. But James Ferrence, another candidate for County Commission, filed a challenge, saying Williams was not a resident of that address.
Williams, through his attorney, asked the Supreme Court for an expedited hearing on Douglas' ruling because the deadline for sending out ballots in Clark County is July 25.
Gas leaks close two intersections
Natural gas leaks closed the intersection of Tenaya Way and Alexander Road this morning and Paradise Road from Desert Inn Road to Sands Avenue Sunday night.
A construction crew broke a 4-inch pipe about 8:30 this morning at Tenaya and Alexander, and the intersection was closed as a precaution, Southwest Gas spokesman Roger Buehrer said.
Traffic resumed about 9:30, he said.
A leak in the 2-inch line along Paradise Road was discovered about 6 p.m. Sunday by a passing pedestrian, who noticed a smell and called the Clark County Fire Department.
Southwest Gas crews responded, and the intersection of Paradise and Sands was opened to traffic shortly after 11 p.m., Buehrer said.
Repairs continued through the night and were completed about 7 this morning, he said.
