Single mom wants camp for boys

WEEKEND EDITION: July 13, 2002

The single mother of two boys says she cannot afford to do special things with them. She is seeking assistance from the Sun Camp Fund.

One of the boys has had a tough time adjusting to her divorce, and she believes he would benefit from some male leadership at camp.

"The experience of camp would be a great asset teaching them to grow up and enjoy the outdoors," she says.

The single mother of a 13-year-old boy says he conducts himself well.

"I cannot afford to take him on an outing like camp," she says. "He should go to camp because of the experience of being outdoors and bonding with other children socially."

The boy says he wants to be a camp counselor one day.

A 12-year-old girl, who is an only child, has lots of ambition, according to her mother. She went to camp for the first time last year and "has been talking about it ever since," her mother says.

"It helped open her mind more about so many different cultures and activities, and being responsible while away from home," the mother says. "All kids should experience camping."

Sometimes simple things, such as toasting marshmallows and singing around the campfire and spending time around camp counselors who are positive role models are the memories that a child will carry with her through the rest of her life.
