Baby-sitter found guilty of abuse

A Clark County jury Thursday found a 34-year-old Las Vegas resident guilty of eight counts of sexual abuse of a minor under 14 following five hours of deliberations.

As a result of the verdict, Victor Manuel Rivera could receive as many as eight consecutive life sentences on Aug. 21.

According to prosecutors, Rivera sexually assaulted an 8-year-old boy at least 40 times while baby-sitting him between October 2000 and January 2001. Many of the acts were alleged to have taken place in front of Rivera's 10-year-old son, who testified against him.

Downtown shooting victim identified

A Las Vegas man killed Tuesday on a downtown street was identified as 33-year-old Manuel Rivera of Las Vegas.

Rivera was shot to death on Ogden Avenue at 18th Street Tuesday about 10:30 p.m., Metro Police said.

Witnesses told police a white car was seen leaving the area after the shooting, but little else is known about the killing.

Man, 59, dies after beating

A 59-year-old Las Vegas man beaten in West Las Vegas last week died at University Medical Center from his injuries.

Henry Davis, 59, was severely beaten July 2 in the 1000 block of Cunningham Drive near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Washington Avenue in front of an apartment building, Metro Police said.

Davis was taken to University Medical Center, but died Tuesday at 2:20 p.m., a hospital spokesman said.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the slaying, police said.
