An emergency roundup of wild horses helped save more than 300 horses from heat that scorched vegetation crucial to the animals' survival, officials from the Bureau of Land Management said.
The roundup began June 22 and ended Sunday with a roundup at Red Rock National Park. Sunday's roundup yielded 60 horses, BLM spokesman Phillip Guerrero said.
The BLM will hold about 30 of the 302 horses at Oliver Ranch, where they will be fed and brought back to health, Guerrero said. After that, weather permitting, they will be brought back to Red Rock. The others will go to long-term care facilities, and the healthier animals will be put up for adoption, he said.
