Letter: GOP abandons states’ rights on nuclear waste

Thursday, July 11, 2002 | 8:50 a.m.

The Republican Party in the United States continues to represent itself as the protector of states' rights.

Yet, in the past few months, 203 of 216 Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and this past week 46 of 49 Senate Republicans have voted to force the storage of potentially fatal nuclear waste on the citizens of Nevada over the objections of Nevada citizens and our governor.

Clearly, the Republican Party has abrogated its chosen role as a states' rights party. One can only hope that Nevada voters will remember that in upcoming elections.
