Kids’ pennies add up for leukemia
Wednesday, July 10, 2002 | 8:57 a.m.
Students at Hayes Elementary School and at 26 other Southern Nevada schools and day-care centers learned first-hand this school year that a penny saved is penny earned.
The elementary school was the top fund-raiser for The Leukemia and Lymphona Society national campaign "Pennies for Patients," raising $3,604.80. The Las Vegas branch raised more than $27,000 through local kids donating their spare change to help fight leukemia.
"Children helping children is what makes 'Pennies for Patients' so special," Deann Cline, campaign manager of the society's Las Vegas branch, said.
The money raised will go to programs and services for patients in Southern Nevada and to the organization's national research program.
Hayes Elementary School won a framed, signed autograph poster of pop singer Mandy Moore, who served as the honorary chairwoman for the society's School and Youth Programs.
