Homeless coalition backs property tax
Wednesday, July 10, 2002 | 8:55 a.m.
A coalition of public and private agencies that works with the homeless polled its members Tuesday on whether or not to back a property tax that would raise money for affordable housing, shelters and other services. A formal vote will be taken in the coming weeks.
According to the poll, the Southern Nevada Homeless Coalition supports the annual tax of 1 cent per $100 of assessed value on November's ballot after a presentation on the initiative by Douglas Bell, director of Clark County community resources management.
The tax would "create a predictable revenue stream" for the region's nonprofits that help the homeless, Bell said. The initiative would raise an estimated $4 million -- "not the be all or end all, but one more resource among many," he said.
The money would go into a trust fund that would be governed by a board of elected officials.
When and how the board would be created and the way it would spend the money are still unclear.
If voters approve the ballot question in November, the 2003 Legislature would then have to pass legislation to impose the tax.
