Columnist Peter Benton: Phoenix volunteer places Southwest golf on the map

Wednesday, July 10, 2002 | 10:12 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

Congratulations to a golfing neighbor of ours, 72-year old Bill Dickey of Phoenix, who has put our Southwest Section of the PGA on the map by being selected by the U.S. Golf Association to receive the prestigious 2001 Joseph C. Dey Award.

This award, given in honor of meritorious service to the game as a volunteer, was awarded to Dickey, who started the National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association and who has been a leader in Southwest golf for more than 30 years.

Dickey's service has been recognized by many golf organizations. He is an inductee into the Western States Golf Association's Hall of Fame and the National Black Golf Hall of Fame.

He has received the PGA's Distinguished Service Award, the Arizona Golf Association's Updegraff Award, the Tiger Woods Foundation's Sharing and Caring Award, the Golf Digest Junior Development Award and the PGA Tour's Card Walker Award.

Most recently, for his untiring and selfless services over the year, Dickey was inducted into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame.

The Joseph C. Dey Award, which is given annually, is once again going to a most deserving recipient.

In the net division, the northern teams of Margie Wonhoff/Judy Sather and Kristine Gingras/Jenny Miles placed first and second, respectively, with scores of 114 and 115.

Patty Wright was second at 15-over after shooting 78-81, and Medley Sapp-Denne was third at 16-over after rounds of 79-81.

In a scorecard playoff, Lynn King won the net title at 4-under (140) with round of 72-68, while Sue Roma was second after rounds of 71-69.Peter Benton
