Record temperatures expected

Monday, July 8, 2002 | 9:35 a.m.

This week's daytime temperatures could set records, National Weather Service forecasters say.

How hot could it get? Try 115 by the end of the week.

"The temperatures will be close to record highs the next two days," meteorologist Jerome Jacques said. "If everything I expect pans out, the rest of the week could also see near or above record temperatures."

Normally the Las Vegas Valley is preparing for the Southwest monsoon season, when the forecast is more likely to bring flash flooding that can turn streets into rivers and bring afternoon temperatures below 100 degrees.

Forget afternoon thunderstorms this week, meteorologists are saying.

Today the thermometer could hit 111 degrees or higher. The record of 113 degrees was set in 1989.

Sunday the high registered at 109 degrees at 5:42 p.m. The record was 114 set in 1989.

Tuesday's forecast shows the high is expected to tie or break the record temperature of 113 degrees, set in 1943.

By Friday the highs are expected to hover between 110 and 115 degrees.

A dome of high pressure is pushing any hint of moisture away from Nevada.
