Jazz in July
Las Vegas' Cultural Affairs Division presents "Jazz Under the Stars -- An American Original" at 6 p.m. today at the West Las Vegas Arts Center's amphitheatre, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Admission is free, but bring blankets or lawn chairs. Call 229-4800.
Band battle
The WorldFolk Foundation presents its fourth-annual Battle of the Bands, a competition featuring 150 bands at 12 venues, through Saturday at various locations. Call 227-5017.
Made for children
The Young People's Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Clark County's Parks and Community Services Department, presents a children's comedy show featuring singer and humorist Norman Foote at 11 a.m. Saturday at Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Admission is $3. Call 455-7340.
Big band music

Hot Notes
"Hot Notes at the Trat," a new musical series based on Vegas' vintage years and featuring Christy Coffey and Her Swingin' Cats, will debut at 10 p.m. Thursday at Piero's Trattoria, 325 Hughes Center Drive. Admission is free. Call 892-9955.

Outdoor musical
Super Summer Theatre presents the musical comedy "Li'l Abner" at 8 p.m. Wednesday through July 13 at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park on West Charleston Boulevard. Performances continue July 17-20 and July 24-27. Tickets are $7-$10. Call 594-7529.
Children's theater
Boxtales Theatre Company presents "Waters of the Earth," an audience-participation theater where children learn folklore, music and mythology of seafaring people from around the world, at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S.
