Letter: Religion is not being imposed

Friday, July 5, 2002 | 3:41 a.m.

I have an answer to Dotty Hughes' question in her June 30 letter, "Is United States a theocracy?": Of course not. The people who hold this ridiculous notion as it relates to the "Pledge of Allegiance" or the use of school vouchers seem to believe "under God" somehow implies "establishment of religion."

Since when is God a religion? For me and millions of others, God is our object of worship. Why? Because He's the creator and sustainer of life! He's the giver of everything we have in this life, including our rights.

For this reason President Bush, in defending "under God" in the "Pledge of Allegiance," is correct when he says that our rights come from God, not from man. And God is certainly not a man, for the Bible makes clear in John 4:24 that "God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth."

If the words in the pledge were "one nation, under Joe," then it would be reasonable to argue religious idolatry. But don't equate "under God" with "establishment of religion."

Those who do so are deliberately attempting to destroy the very fabric of America's Judeo-Christian values.
