Letter: Don’t put waste in one place

Friday, July 5, 2002 | 3:43 a.m.

I believe it was in the movie "Midway" where a U.S. Army officer ordered all the airplanes that were parked near the perimeter of the airstrip to be moved into a central location in the middle of the field so that saboteurs would not have access to them.

His reasoning is similar to the thinking of some who are "in charge" of the Yucca Mountain project. Unfortunately, in the movie, this plan backfired because it gave the Japanese aircraft easier access to all the U.S. planes that were bunched together.

This was only a movie, perhaps true to life, perhaps not. But the Yucca Mountain fiasco is a real-life situation. Not only should we be opposed to storing all this waste in one place, we should just as vehemently oppose its shipment across our country.

It's one huge accident waiting to happen, and I pray the powers that be will come to their senses.
