Land auction is rescheduled

Friday, July 5, 2002 | 8:43 a.m.

The Bureau of Land Management has rescheduled an auction of 210 acres in the Las Vegas Valley for July 30.

The sale would be the sixth in a series of auctions authorized by the 1998 Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act, which would ultimately turn over more than 20,000 acres of federal land in the valley to private interests.

An auction originally scheduled for May 14 was temporarily derailed by a request for an injunction by Robert Hall, president of the Nevada Environmental Coalition. Hall argued that an assessment of air pollution caused by the cumulative impact of the land sales should be conducted.

But U.S. District Court Judge Lloyd George rejected the effort June 12.

Money from the sales goes to the purchase and protection of environmentally sensitive land in Nevada. Portions also go to the state's eduction fund, the Southern Nevada Water Authority and for protection of Lake Tahoe.

The land to be offered July 30 was appraised at a total of $23 million in 39 separate parcels. The parcels range in size from 1.25 to 30 acres.

Detailed information on the land for sale is available at www.nv.blm.gov. For information, call the BLM at 515-5000.
