Teen killed in NLV home

A teenager was killed and a man was shot twice inside his North Las Vegas home during a gun battle early Tuesday.

North Las Vegas Police were called to Lake Mead Hospital about 1 a.m. Tuesday to talk with Daniel Madriz, who had been shot in the hand and in the buttock.

Officers then went to Madriz's apartment on East Evans Avenue near Las Vegas Boulevard North and found a male, who appeared to be a teenager, dead on the sofa with a gunshot wound in the head.

Police are not sure of the motive of the shooting, but suspect it may have been a home invasion robbery attempt. Apparently three men entered Madriz's home about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday and a gun battle started.

The teen was apparently one of the suspects, police said. But detectives were not sure who fired the weapons.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the North Las Vegas Police at 633-9111 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Woman, 54, dies in car accident

A 54-year-old woman died in a single-car accident in Jean about 25 miles south of Las Vegas about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Metro Police said.

The woman, whose name was not released this morning, was driving a car eastbound on Sandy Valley Road when for an unknown reason car left the roadway and went onto the dirt shoulder, police said.

The car drove up onto a large rock causing the car to roll over onto its roof, police said. The accident remains under investigation.

Landfill closer to golf course

A Henderson city landfill closed since the mid-1970s moved closer to becoming the city's first municipal golf course Tuesday.

The Henderson City Council approved requests for engineering and environmental services to close the 147-acre landfill in accordance with federal guidelines. Capping the landfill could cost about $12.2 million, city officials say.

The city began planning the closure in 1997 with the help of the state Division of Environmental Protection and the Clark County Health District.

In 1997 the city annexed the landfill site, on the north end of Olsen Street just west of the Tuscany Hills Redevelopment Area.
