Independence Day commemorates the American colonies declaring independence from England, not the day freedom actually was won. That would take a five-year-long war. The Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The Revolutionary War ended when the British surrendered at Yorktown, Pa., on Oct. 19, 1781.
