Gulf Coast hotels filling up for Fourth of July
Wednesday, July 3, 2002 | 9:31 a.m.
BILOXI, Miss. -- A midweek Fourth of July holiday appears to be benefiting some Gulf Coast hotels.
The holiday falls on a Thursday this year, which means many workers will get a four-day weekend.
"Because the holiday falls midweek, it could go either way," said Beverly Martin, director of the Mississippi Casino Operators Association. "For some reason this year, it appears as though the weekends prior and after are going to be really good weekends."
Although a few vacancies remain, hotel rooms are filling up fast.
Families who come down for fireworks and other festivities also are expected to stay longer than the usual one or two nights, said Linda Hornsby, director of the Gulf Coast Hotel & Lodging Association of Mississippi.
"This is probably going to be better than even next year," she said. "So many people this year are taking off another day and making it a mini-vacation."
