Yucca legal fight will be joined

Clark County commissioners agreed Tuesday to join the city of Las Vegas and the state in a legal battle challenging a final Environmental Impact Statement on storing high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain.

The state is challenging the "appropriateness and legality" of the final report, which was performed by the Energy Department and submitted to President Bush.

Advisory question concerns homelesss

A proposal to raise property taxes to fund Southern Nevada homeless services and programs is on its way to voters, who will decide whether the idea is worthy to be taken up by legislators.

Clark County commissioners voted to place an advisory question on the ballot asking residents whether a Homeless Services and Affordable Housing Trust Fund should be created and financed by a one-cent tax increase.

One penny per $100 of assessed value, which is about $7 a year for a $200,000 home, would generate about $4 million annually for local homeless and affordable housing programs.

Moapa will vote on 911 tax hike

An advisory question asking Moapa residents whether they are willing to increase property taxes by a half-cent per $100 of assessed valuation for an enhanced 911 system was approved Tuesday for the November ballot.

Commissioners agreed to allow Moapa voters to determine whether they want higher taxes to improve the system for police, fire and paramedic services.
