Bras will stretch along Strip to support breast cancer research

Wednesday, July 3, 2002 | 9:07 a.m.

It's not every day that you can see more than 10,000 bras stretched across the Las Vegas Strip from the Mandalay Bay to the Stratosphere.

But the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Goodwill of Southern Nevada Inc. are currently collecting bras to do just that on July 28.

The charity event, "Bras Across the Strip," hopes to raise awareness of breast cancer. Radio stations KKLZ 96.3-FM and KSTJ 102.7-FM and the Rio's "Show Girls" are presenting the display of bras.

The public is encouraged to donate both new and used bras to Goodwill for the event. The nonprofit organization is also accepting cash donations for the foundation, with 100 percent of the profits going toward breast cancer research.

All new bras collected will be donated to Safe Nest and the rest recycled after the event.

The breast cancer foundation was started in 1982 by Nancy Brinker in honor of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at 36. The international organization now has more than 70,000 volunteers that work to help advance breast cancer research and to pay for community-based health education, screening and treatment projects though events like "Bras Across the Strip" and Komen Race for the Cure.
