Williams’ challenger Williams off ballot

Monday, July 1, 2002 | 9:40 a.m.

Clark County Commissioner Myrna Williams lost one of her opponents in the Democratic primary Friday when a challenger with a similar name was thrown off the ballot.

Candidate Michael Williams was deemed ineligible to run for the Commission E seat by District Judge Michael Douglas.

Douglas determined that the challenger did not meet residency requirements because he owns a house in Henderson, outside the commission district, and signed an illegal sublease agreement with a friend in an apartment complex within the district.

The judge said that since the Flamingo Road apartment complex did not allow such subletting, Williams' agreement did not qualify him to run as a District E candidate.

The incumbent Williams now faces Nevada Stupak, son of gaming maverick Bob Stupak, in the Democratic primary. Two Republicans are also in the race.

The challenger Williams became the third candidate thrown off the ballot by judges in the past two weeks.

Last week Chief District Judge Mark Gibbons tossed a challenger named David Parks off the ballot in the Democratic primary for Assembly District 41 -- a seat currently held by incumbent David Parks, D-Las Vegas. The challenger Parks said he lived in Las Vegas about 40 percent of the year, but since Gibbons was offered no proof of that, he said the challenger was not a resident and could not run.

Two weeks ago District Judge Sally Loehrer threw Henderson Township Constable candidate Nicholas Hansen off the ballot because, at 20, he would be ineligible to become a peace officer if he won. Constables are required to be peace officers.

Hansen is appealing the decision to the Nevada Supreme Court.
