City to improve access for disabled

Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 | 9:07 a.m.

Boulder City is one of 21 communities across the country that has agreed to improve access for people with disabilities.

Minor work will be done at more than 10 facilities in Boulder City to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to a settlement between the city and the Justice Department.

Most of the changes range from transforming bathroom stalls so they are accessible to the disabled to widening doorways, Boulder City Manager John Sullard said.

"There isn't anything major that we've had to do," Sullard said. "I don't know how we were chosen to be audited, but we were."

City Hall, the Boulder Dam Hotel, the courthouse, police station and airport are included in the project.

Sullard said the modifications will cost the city about $50,000.

Some of the buildings in question were built in the 1930s and do not comply with ADA guidelines, Sullard said.

The city is also required to post signs directing people to disabled access points and install a listening system to facilitate communications in courtrooms and in City Hall for the hearing impaired.
