Local student, teacher study Alaska

Monday, Jan. 28, 2002 | 8:24 a.m.

The adventures of a Henderson high school student and a Laughlin elementary school teacher in Alaska's frozen landscape will be broadcast by satellite this week.

Rick Anderson, a ninth grader at Green Valley High School, and Patty Moore, a fifth grade teacher at William G. Bennett Elementary School, will join scientist and explorer Robert Ballard from Monday through Friday as "argonauts" on the "JASON XIII: Frozen Worlds" expedition.

The JASON project is a national program that integrates math, science and technology with other subjects using as its theme each year an unusual location around the world with the goal of inspiring students to pursue science, math and technology.

Team leaders Moore and Anderson are joining a team of 33 argonauts worldwide. They prepared for their adventure by reading books, conducting experiments, completing assignments and chatting online with members of the research team.

Ballard conducts scientific explorations each year. Las Vegas students can link live with the local student and teacher at the Community College of Southern Nevada Cheyenne Campus in North Las Vegas.

About 15,000 Clark County School District students who have spent the year studying the earth's polar regions will take virtual trips this week and Feb. 4-8 during one-hour broadcasts at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the CCSN auditorium.

The public can follow their adventures at 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday to Feb. 8, and Saturday at 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Cheyenne campus auditorium.

An exhibit will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
