A memorial service for Peter A. R. Kirwan, an English Department lecturer at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and former British consul general in New York, will be 3 p.m. Thursday in the UNLV Moyer Student Union building.

The 81-year-old London-born Kirwan, who worked at UNLV since 1997, died Jan. 18.

Born Sept. 14, 1921, Kirwan was educated at Pembroke College in Cambridge, England, and served as a lieutenant in the Royan Navy during World War II. A specialist in underwater warfare, he saw action in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean.

After the war Kirwan worked for an import-export company in Calcutta, India.

From 1963 to 1969 Kirwan was British consul general to New York, where he was responsible for trade and promotion of British consumer products and services.

Kirwan served on the faculty of Hunter College in New York from 1970 until his retirement in 1994, when he moved to Las Vegas. Three years later he joined UNLV as a lecturer.

In 2000, Kirwan became an American citizen.

He is survived by his companion of 35 years, Haskell Yett.
