Cortez raise recommended

Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 | 10:31 a.m.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority's compensation committee has recommended a 3 percent raise and a bonus for LVCVA President Manny Cortez.

The committee reviewed Cortez's performance Thursday and recommended raising his annual salary to about $221,500 and paying him a 3 percent cash bonus of about $6,450.

The recommendation will be considered by the full board at its February meeting. The LVCVA is responsible for marketing the city to tourists and conventions.

Cortez was evaluated for his efforts in achieving five goals for 2001, including completion of the South Hall expansion, working to get road construction funds for Interstate 15, drafting a new master plan, developing marketing strategies to increase visitation and continuing efforts to attract direct international flights to Las Vegas.

The committee criticized Cortez for cost overruns on the 1.3 million-square-foot expansion project, which was budgeted for $150 million, but ended up costing about $170 million. The building opened earlier this month for the International Consumer Electronics Show.
