Binion’s sued over tip pool

Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 | 11:07 a.m.

Twelve managers and coordinators for the World Series of Poker at Binion's Horseshoe Club sued the downtown Las Vegas casino and its owner Becky Behnen, alleging they failed to equitably distribute $540,000 in tips to tournament personnel and allegedly used most of the money to pay bonuses to casino employees.

Binion's Horseshoe is accused in the District Court suit of violating an agreement to pay the plaintiffs their share of 3 percent of an $18 million prize pool for the April 2001 tournament.

The plaintiffs, who said they would have received $190,000 of the $540,000 tip pool if it had been distributed as allegedly agreed, said they received less than $40,000 after working more than 350 hours over a 30-day period without overtime.

The suit said withholding 3 percent of the prize pool as tips for tournament personnel developed as voluntary tipping by players decreased in recent years, resulting in a lack of skilled personnel for these tournaments.

The defendants could not be reached for comment on the allegations.
