CARSON CITY -- High schools from Las Vegas and Elko have been named Blue Ribbon Schools and will be entered in a national contest sponsored by the federal government.
The Las Vegas Academy and Spring Creek High School in Elko have been selected as Nevada winners, said Jack McLaughlin, state superintendent of public instruction.
McLaughlin said the "standard of excellence these two schools exhibit makes the entire state proud."
Bob Eddy of the state Department of Education said the schools demonstrated high achievement in student performance, instruction, parent involvement and professional development.
Their names will be forwarded to the federal Blue Ribbon Council, which will come to Nevada next month to assess the schools.
The last school to win the national award from Nevada was Becker Middle School in Las Vegas in 1999-2000.
