UNLV routed on the road

Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 | 9:38 a.m.

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- The temperature fell below zero in some areas around here Thursday night.

That was nearly as cold as the shooting performance by the UNLV Lady Rebels in their 75-58 loss to the Wyoming Cowgirls at Arena Auditorium.

UNLV (14-2, 2-1 Mountain West) shot a dismal 29 percent (10-for-35) in falling behind 40-27 at halftime. It could never recover against a scrappy Wyoming (8-7, 1-2) squad that had five players score in double figures and outrebounded the Lady Rebels, 48-34.

"We had a lot of good looks early but we missed a lot of layups and easy shots," UNLV coach Regina Miller said. "I knew going in that Wyoming would be a very tough team to play. Tonight they were the better team. They executed better. They were the more aggressive team. And we didn't have the energy at the start that we needed to have."

Senior forward Linda Frohlich had 25 points and six rebounds before fouling out for the Lady Rebels, who had their 10-game winning streak snapped. Frohlich now has 1,000 career rebounds, joining former All-American Pauline Jordan as the only UNLV players to perform the feat.

Wyoming, which sank seven of its 16 3-point tries, was led by guard Carly Stucky, who had 16 points, including four treys. The Cowgirls are 6-0 at home this season.

The Lady Rebels, who had visions of a Top 25 ranking if they could have swept their Front Range road trip, return to action on Saturday afternoon at No. 20 Colorado State.

"We just have to regroup and go into Colorado State," Miller said. "If we can get a win there, this still would be considered a good road trip for us."
