Sun Athletes of the Week: Kevin Marshall and Yolonda Johnson
Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 | 9:19 a.m.
Male Athlete of the Week: KEVIN MARSHALL
School: Foothill
Class: Senior
Sport: Basketball
Last week: Marshall, a 5-foot-10 guard, averaged 18 points in three Falcons victories. Foothill's leading scorer tallied 23 points in a 68-64 win over Durango on Monday, 12 in a 65-45 win over Vo-Tech on Wednesday and 19 in a 75-64 win over Silverado Friday, bringing his season average to 20.7 points. "He's our go-to guy, and we look to him for senior leadership as well," Falcons coach Kevin Soares said. "Last year, we played him out of position at power forward, and it's a credit to him how he's worked on his jump shot so much this year."
Female Athlete of the Week: YOLONDA JOHNSON
School: Valley
Class: Freshman
Sport: Basketball
Last week: Johnson, a 5-foot-6 guard, scored 30 points to go with 11 rebounds, nine assists and eight steals, leading the Vikings to a pair of Northeast Division wins over Desert Pines and Las Vegas. Johnson, the younger sister of former Rancho and University of Oklahoma guard Mike Johnson, netted 14 points in a 71-60 victory over the Jaguars Tuesday and 16 in a 54-39 triumph over the Wildcats Thursday. "She may be a freshman, but she's not afraid of a challenge," Valley coach Barney Holmes said. "She's a consistent player -- she can light it up from anywhere, she gets great position for rebounds and she's held her own against bigger girls on defense."
