North Las Vegas council briefs for January 17, 2002
Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 | 9:40 a.m.
City Council members authorized city officials to negotiate a contract with the North Las Vegas Housing Authority, which is requesting $400,000 in subsidies to build 30 homes for low-income families throughout the city.
The money would come from federal funds and help the authority get the $3.6 million project off the ground. Bonds are expected to cover the bulk of the costs.
Authority officials plan to initially lease the homes to eligible families and sell them to them over time.
Once a contract has been drawn up, council members will have to approve it.
Purchase of new system approved
City Council members approved the purchase of an emergency telephone system worth $268,048 for the police department.
The new system is compatible with systems used by the Henderson and Metro Police, which can be used as a backup in case of power failure or technical problems.
A proposal to refinance $4.98 million
in outstanding street bonds received City Council approval. The refinancing will bring interest rates down to 4.1 percent and save the city $236,000 over the next 12 years. The move will also free up an addition $20,000 per year for streets, police stations and parks.
The City Council awarded
a $399,900 contract to BLASTCO Inc. to paint the city's central water reservoirs at City View Park. The two reservoirs, which hold 3 million gallons of water each, have not been painted in more than 30 years. The company will remove lead- and chromium-based paint from the reservoirs, examine them for corrosion, repair any problems and repaint them.
