Letter: Younger Bush lacks courage of his father
Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 | 8:43 a.m.
This is in response to Brian Greenspun's column, "Like father, like son." In comparing "read my lips" to "over my dead body," Mr. Greenspun laments that George W. might be following in his father's footsteps. I don't believe that will be the case.
When confronted with the conflict between his political promise and necessary fiscal policy, the senior Bush chose the latter and knowingly suffered the political consequences of his actions. I don't believe this President Bush has the courage of his father.
He will not admit to his mistake and change the course of his policies. He will choose fiscal irresponsibility and continue to press for revenue reductions and increased spending. This in turn will lead us back to budget deficits and increasing national debt, followed by inflation and a stagnant economy.
That will be the political demise of George W. Bush.
