Las Vegas area fishing report: Rainbows are biting at Lake Mead

Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002 | 9:28 a.m.

NEVADA DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

Good fishing continues to be found at Lake Mead for rainbow trout following the Nevada Division of Wildlife's weekly plants. The better action has been taking place at Hemenway Harbor and B-5 (Pumphouse) Cove. This week's stocking will take place Friday at those two locations and Horsepower Cove and South Saddle Cove.

NDOW creel census clerks who have been working at Overton Beach Marina have checked very few crappie during the past week. However, fishing for largemouth bass has been good recently with fish being caught from Fish Island to the Virgin narrows with black artificial worms.

Striped bass fishing has been slow throughout the lake with only a few fish coming from Las Vegas Bay and around Hemenway Harbor in the Boulder Basin. Creel clerks have failed to check any stripers in recent days at Callville Bay and only a pair of very thin stripers were seen at Overton Beach.

A 23-pound striped bass was caught on Saturday near Cottonwood Cove. NDOW creel census clerks also checked several stripers at Cottonwood over the weekend that ranged from 18-20 inches.
