Metro deputy chief’s finance report shows a flood of donations

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002 | 9:26 a.m.

Metro Deputy Chief Bill Young was able to pull in $190,000 in just six weeks for his bid to be Clark County's next sheriff.

And although Sheriff Jerry Keller, who is retiring, initially said he was not ready to endorse a successor, his campaign's $5,000 donation to Young was the first money the deputy chief reported receiving in a document filed Tuesday with the county elections department.

All candidates for state and local offices up for election in 2002 were required to file reports detailing the money raised in 2001.

Young's report made the biggest local statement, showing a flood of donations from lawyers, gaming companies and construction firms.

J.A. Tiberti Construction companies gave him two donations totaling $20,000 and Mario Tiberti tossed in another $5,000. Republic Services and its related entities gave Young $14,900 and Park Place Entertainment donated $10,000.

Republican businessman Bill Brady raised $342,650 in his bid for state Senate District 9, including a $250,000 personal loan and $5,000 each from Senate Republican Leadership and Raggio Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio's PAC.

He also got $5,000 from U.S. Sen. John Ensign's political action committee, Battle Born State PAC.

The report for Assemblyman Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, who is running against Brady, was not immediately available.

Assemblywoman Sandra Tiffany, R-Henderson, reported $134,070 in contributions for her state Senate District 5 bid, including $5,000 each from Ensign's PAC, the Senate Republican Leadership and Raggio's Senate Campaign.

In Clark County races, Democrat Michael Davidson reported raising $97,825 for his bid to be the next district attorney, including $5,000 each from Boyd Gaming, Coast Resorts and Coast Hotels and Casinos.

District Attorney Stewart Bell, who is stepping down, reported having $20,207 remaining from prior campaigns.

County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury reported a campaign balance of $197,681 after his 2001 re-election.

County Commissioner Myrna Williams reported $192,055 in contributions and a $283,240 ending balance for her 2002 re-election campaign.

Williams' contributions were dominated by developers and gaming companies, including large donations from the Howard Hughes Corp., Stations Casinos' entities, Mandalay Resort Group entities and Park Place Entertainment entities.
