Locks will be given away in state

Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt and the Nevada Sheriff's Association launched a home safety program Jan. 7 that will deliver 50,000 gun locks throughout Nevada.

Project HomeSafe, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and funded by the firearms industry and a $4.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, is responsible for the 30-day tour.

The program will be traveling throughout the state providing residents with a free firearms safety kit that includes a cable-style gun lock and a safety brochure. The gun lock fits many types of firearms, but in order to install the cable the gun must be unloaded first. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has approved the distribution of the gun, according to HomeSafe.

The safety tour will travel in a 16-foot mobile classroom van that will provide safety education along with free products. Residents will be able to watch a safety video and view a display of safe storage equipment while children can take the Project HomeSafe Pledge, their commitment to be safe around firearms.

The HomeSafe van will be in Las Vegas Sunday through Feb. 5.
