Online devices in development

Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002 | 10:46 a.m.

U.S. gaming companies, such as New Jersey-based Interactive Systems Worldwide Inc., are developing new gambling technologies in the expectation online gambling will be made legal in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Interactive Systems is working on a handheld gambling device that will facilitate an online "contest" concept in the United States, based on a system for interactive-television betting that the company designed for KirchGruppe Holding GmbH, the Journal said.

Although under current U.S. laws American television viewers may not bet money, they can play in contests, the Journal reported. Interactive Systems Chairman Barry Mindes envisions people playing with credits they would earn by answering online questions from advertisers, it said.

It's not clear when online gambling will be legalized in the United States, or that any such appliance would be approved, the paper reported.
