So you wanna be a ref?

Anyone interested in officiating high school or youth sports games can attend any of the Southern Nevada Officials Association's weekly meetings. To find out more, call president Bill McGee at 646-3787.
No, though those with prior experience might move more quickly to the varsity level. "We never turn away anybody who wants to officiate. Even if they have no previous experience, there's a place for them," district athletic director Larry McKay said.
New officials attend weekly classes to learn rules, as well as regular sessions to improve floor or field mechanics. Written tests are administered once a week, with an 80 percent grade considered passing.
Not long, if you demonstrate proficiency. "If you come in mid-October and show an interest and an 80 percent aptitude, you can receive an assignment within the first week of December," said Jeff Wells, an official who instructs new basketball referees.
Anywhere from $26 to $50 per event, depending on the sport, level of competition and number of officials in your crew. Drivers and passengers traveling to contests outside of the Las Vegas area also receive a mileage reimbursement.
People officiate for a variety of reasons: some as a career, others as a way to stay involved in athletics or remain in good physical condition and still others for the camaraderie.
"It's an opportunity to stay in sports, stay fit, mingle with some outstanding people who are willing to give their time to others and get paid," McGee said.
