Pay raises limited

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- The Mohegan Sun Casino is feeling the pinch of the sluggish economy and will cut back on raises to its nearly 10,000 workers this year.

"The adjustments we are making until the economy recovers are painful but necessary in the short run," Bill Velardo, president, chief executive officer and general manager of Mohegan Sun, wrote in a letter sent to employees this week.

Velardo said that for the last four years, pay raises have been 5 percent, but this year will be 4 percent.

Velardo said that while publicly announced slot machine revenues have been good, they have not been as high as was once anticipated.

The Mohegan Tribe opened its $1.1 billion Sunburst expansion in late September.

Velardo said the casino incurred great expenses to build Sunburst and its operating costs are up dramatically with the expansion.
