Man arrested after fatal fight

Metro Police homicide detectives arrested a 19-year-old man Wednesday in connection with a fight in which two men were bludgeoned with cinder blocks.

Usman Anuku Sadiq was arrested by detectives at his home Wednesday and charged with the attempted murder of Jesse Covington, 24, during a fight in an apartment complex parking lot that left one man dead.

The fight broke out after a truck was driven through a block wall.

"The investigation is continuing, and there is at least one outstanding suspect," homicide unit Lt. Tom Monahan said.

Kristopher Gregory, 21, was apparently beaten to death Monday night after crashing the truck he was driving into a wall at an apartment complex near Rainbow and Charleston boulevards. Covington, who remains in critical condition at University Medical Center, was riding in the truck.

The pair apparently got into an argument with some people behind a gas station near the Sundance Village Apartments, 6500 W. Charleston Blvd., police said.

There appears to have been a fight and then Gregory and Covington got into the truck to flee but ended up crashing into the wall, Sgt. Rocky Alby said.

It is unclear if the pair attempted to run over anyone as they attempted to leave, Alby said.

At least two suspects are believed to have picked up cinder blocks broken from the wall by the truck crash and used them to attack Gregory and Covington, police said.
