Savvy wine buys: Robert Biale Vineyards Napa, Calif.

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 | 8:22 a.m.

The reason for this slightly confusing appellation is that the grapes are grown in the Sacramento Delta just east of Sacramento, but the wine is actually made at the Biale facility in Napa. The reason that Zinfandel, the only grape native to California, has become an expensive wine is that public demand seems only to want big, blowsy, heavily concentrated versions that are time consuming and expensive to make. With that in mind, this is a terrific wine -- ripe, sweet, alcoholic and juicy, a wine that will stand up to almost anything you serve with it.

Available at Las Vegas Wine Company and Nevada Wine Cellars, $33.99.
