Probe results in charges

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 | 9:25 a.m.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The investigation of a University of Florida basketball player providing inside information to gamblers revealed a betting ring, and six people have been charged.

Another 25 people face minor betting charges as a result of the probe, University Police spokesman Joe Sharkey said.

Teddy Dupay, a University of Florida shooting guard, was declared ineligible to play in early September after he was listed as an uncharged co-defendant in a gambling investigation by school police.

Authorities said Ralph P. Chick, 48, of Gainesville, took bets on college and professional baseball and football. Wire tapes on his phone lines led to additional suspects, police said.

Chick was charged with racketeering, bookmaking and criminal conspiracy.
