Mysterious discoloration of water at new school puzzles officials

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002 | 9:26 a.m.

A mysterious, and so far, harmless discoloration in the water at the new Kay Carl year-round elementary school has Clark County School District officials puzzled, and students have been instructed not to drink the water at least until next week.

The cream-colored water was discovered in a kitchen faucet late last month, school district spokeswoman Pat Nelson said this morning. Tests by a private laboratory have shown the water to be "completely safe," Nelson said.

"We're waiting for a few final tests, so in the meantime we want to take every precaution," Nelson said.

The school is located at 5625 Corbett St. in northwest Las Vegas, north of Ann Road between Jones and Decatur boulevards. Water dispensers have been set up throughout the buildings and the approximately 750 students are also allowed to bring water bottles from home, Nelson said. Hand sanitizers that don't require water have also been added.

School officials expect the final tests soon and hope to have students drinking from the water fountains by next week, Nelson said.
