Whalen named to Hall of Fame

Metro Police Officer Bernard Whalen was to receive the American Police Hall of Fame's Honor Award today for his service in the Laughlin community.

The 1 p.m. ceremony was to be held at Metro's Laughlin substation.

Whalen is the D.A.R.E. officer for the Laughlin and Searchlight fifth graders. He is also involved in the Explorer program, as well as the truant program and the choices program at Laughlin High School.

Sgt. Chuck Jones said Whalen sets a great example of working with the community to provide a positive example.

Cegavske elected secretary-treasurer

Assemblywoman Barbara Cegavske, R- Las Vegas, was elected secretary-treasurer of Women in Government at the group's eighth annual National State Directors Conference.

At the conference more than 50 state legislators from 35 states gathered to set the regional policy agenda for 2002 and swear the new board members into their three-year terms.

The organization also announced two new websites; the Women in Government Online Member Forum (www.womeningovernment.org) and Women in Government/EDS Online Community (www.eds.com/aging).
